Amycus felt Marion wrap her hand around his wrist but he just shook it off. “No! I get it! And I thought…” he scoffed. He should have known. Pretty girls didn’t end up with the nerd. They always went for the jerks and then, by the time it was too late, they realized how their hearts had gotten broken. He continued walking, not sure where he was going, but he just wanted to get away. Marion didn’t leave him alone and he was started to get annoyed. So she blew him off and now she just had to stick around to gloat. Why couldn’t she just leave!? Professor Pike stopped and turned around. “You see, that’s the problem with pretty girls! You have every guy after you, but you always seem to choose the jerks. I thought you were different, Marion. You were the only person who ever gave me a chance. You ever consider that? Nobody talked to me at school, but you did. And I loved you for that. You saw past all the pimples and the braces! I…of course! How could I have been so stupid!? It’s always the same thing isn’t it? The second I start having feelings for somebody, whoever is in control of the universe finds someone else for them and I’m alone! Do you know what that’s like?! To be alone!? To have your parents die at age five and then having to spend the rest of your life as a freak? Then, finally, one day you come somewhere where it seems like everything’s going to get better and nothing gets better! Everything is still shit!” He was breathing heavily. Am had never told anyone how he really grew up. Never revealed anything before he came to Hogwarts, and now here he was, yelling it in the halls of Hogwarts, where gossip traveled faster than wildfire.
Her brain couldn’t process all this at once. This was her best friend and she had hurt him, heartlessly and carelessly. She felt a bit sick and now she almost felt dizzy with all this brand new information. He had been hiding all this pain, had been so strong while still holding her up. Being her confidant since school. Taking her under his wing when she was hired at Hogwarts. Holding her and bringing her soup and good humor as she cried and locked herself in her room after her fiance had cheated and left her. Always there for her silly complaints with encouragement and positivity. When had she ever asked him about himself? She felt absolutely despicable. She fully processed one bit, at the very least to stop the reeling, and stored the rest away for later. “F-feelings?” she started, feebly.

Amycus dropped the flowers he had been carrying. “Where were you? I looked all over for you! Finally I decided to just walk down to Hogsmeade and get you something in case you were feeling ill and wanted some entertainment or somebody to keep you company!” he frowned. “But obviously I was wrong. It seems you could handle yourself just fine!” Amycus surprised himself with how cold he was sounding. Maybe his feelings towards Marion were more than platonic. “Not that it matters now…” he muttered, still staring at the empty fireplace. He usually didn’t get upset or jealous, but right now he was feeling both. He had never felt such strong negative feelings towards anyone. “Next time you have a date, warn me instead of keeping me waiting in your office for two hours then appearing in the middle of the night with some sleazeball I’ve never heard of!” He slammed the chocolates he’s bought her down on her desk, turned on his heal and stalked off, muttering angrily under his breath.

She stood rooted to the ground as he yelled at her. He was absolutely livid and she had never seen him like this before. Her Am had always been the epitome of calm understanding. There were times during their schooldays when she’d even tried to provoke some sort of anger in him, just to see if it were possible. It had never worked. She looked from the flowers and back to him, dumbfounded and with a seed of anger building in her chest. Hadn’t she been the one to wait for him for three hours for their day trip? He hadn’t answered her owl and she hadn’t been able to find him anywhere. She opened her mouth to say so, but stopped short at the absolute look of ice in his eyes. She felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her head and the hair at the nape of her neck stood on end. She didn’t even hear his next few words, she was so wrapped in a stomach-twisting guilt. What had she done? What kind of a friend was she? Not a very good one. Not compared to Amycus. She didn’t deserve him. She flinched, brought back from her short reverie to real time and reality with the bang of the chocolate box on her desk. Her face crumpled a bit. Fucking chocolates. She looked up to only see his retreating back. “Am,” she tried, but could only manage a whisper. Her vision blurred. “Am, wait!” she said louder, voice cracking a bit as she ran out the door. She caught up to him about halfway down the corridor. “Am, please wait,” she started, grabbing his wrist to get him to at least stop walking away.
